San Francisco Community School's Middle School is the smallest middle school within SFUSD. Presently, there are 93 students. We strive to keep the student/teacher ratio below 25:1. SF Community School is part of Small Schools for Equity, which is a coalition of schools that are small by choice.

Projects: Project-based learning continues through Middle School in content-based projects. During the social studies unit about ancient civilizations, for example, students read the Adventures of Ulysses and conduct a trial to judge whether Ulysses is guilty or innocent for the death of his crew. During the study of American History, students engage in a constitutional debate with students using persuasive and oratory skills to represent their perspectives. In a science project, students study the laws of motion and gravity by building and launching rockets. In a math project, students compete in a tricycle race, graphing their starting point and rate.
Portfolios: Students are required to present 8th grade exit portfolios to demonstrate their readiness to advance to high school. The portfolio consists of mastery-level work from the language arts and social studies class, algebra, and science. Students work throughout the year to revise and edit their work until the works meets standard. They present their portfolios during a 30-minute session to a panel of educators, family members, peers, and community members.
Academics: Students in middle school take three years of integrated language arts and social studies. During sixth and seventh grades, they study pre-algebra in preparation for algebra in the 8th grade. We aim to prepare students to pass 9th grade algebra or pass out of 9th grade algebra into geometry. Students take three years of science during middle school, learning about chemistry, biology, and physics. In P.E. students, engage in a rigorous daily exercise routine.
